Maskne: What is it & how will you deal with the scourge of the time?

What is Acne and how does it appear?

Acne is one of the most common skin problems due to changes in hormonal levels, especially during adolescence. Acne mainly affects the sebaceous glands. Under normal circumstances, sebum protects the skin by creating a waterproof layer, but hormonal changes lead to sebum over-secretion, making the skin much oilier. The surface of the skin is covered with small holes connected to sebaceous glands under the skin. These holes are called pores. The sebaceous glands produce a fatty fluid called sebum. Hyperactivity of the sebaceous glands and blocked pores lead to the appearance of acne.

What are the most common types of acne?

A general distinction regarding acne types is inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne. Inflammatory acne appears with the annoying red pimples or pimples with pus. While non-inflammatory acne includes only the pustules, which may be open or closed but do not develop into inflammatory lesions.

The two types of acne include other types of acne that have different characteristics:

  • Pustular Acne
  • Cystic acne
  • Phage acne
  • Acne from other factors (contact with mineral oils, petroleum or other chemicals)

What is the treatment of acne?

It is important, at the time we realise that our skin is threatened by a strong manifestation of acne, to consult a specialist immediately in order to treat the condition in its initial stage. Because this condition is multifactorial there are treatments that are applied consistently but vary depending on the cause that triggered the disease.

The most well-known method used to treat acne is treatment with topical medicinal creams. If the disease is more severe, then you may need treatment with oral medications. As expected, the side effects of the drugs are wide-ranging and therefore the patient must be fully informed and follow the instructions of his doctor.

Finally, a more modern method of treating acne is the use of laser. It is preferable than oral medication, however, it is more expensive, but just as effective.

Does acne worsen with the use of a face mask?

The use of a facial mask is necessary to protect our health, but it has seemed relatively harmful to the health of our face. Acne caused by prolonged use of the mask is a very common phenomenon which is prevalent as a maskne. The friction between the mask and the skin, causes irritation and aggravates the condition of the skin, especially in cases of people with acne. The right choice of mask that we use plays a very important role in preventing the exacerbation of acne. A cotton face mask is more friendly to the skin and will hardly irritate it in combination with a thorough washing.
